Bangalore: During a progress review meeting with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar, the government allowed students to wear hijabs while appearing for exams.

Speaking to India Today, the Higher Education Minister stated that students will be allowed to wear hijabs while appearing for competitive exams such as NEET, JEE and more.

"This is a secular country. People are free to dress however they want," Sudhakar told India Today. The higher education minister also stated that any curb placed on students would amount to infringement of the rights of individuals.

Clearing the air over the Hijab ban in Karnataka, the higher education minister stated that - "people are trying to create controversy in the matter of writing exams while wearing hijab." He added that "some people are there just to create confusion."

"I have taken measures in view of everyone's freedom. It is allowed to write the NEET and other exams while wearing hijab," the minister added.

However, the minister added that students wearing hijabs would be asked to reach the exam centres an hour in advance so that they can be checked. The minister stated that the students "will be thoroughly checked. We don't want any sort of malpractice."

It is to be noted that the hijab ban in schools is yet to be removed. The higher education minister has clarified that hijab is no longer banned for competitive exams, recruitment exams and exams which are conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority.
